The Children’s Book Green Eggs and Ham, written by Dr. Seuss, is a charming story about Sam-I-am as he follows an unnamed man, repeatedly asking him if he would like to try some green eggs and ham. The man exclaims he doesn’t like green eggs and ham but has never really tried them. Sam is persistent and the man eventually gives in and tries it. The story is a lesson on pre-judgements and prejudices.

Prejudice is an opinion that is not based on actual experience. It is actions based on pre-conceived notions. You might say, “That person doesn’t look friendly”, or “I’m not going to sit by them” or “That cake doesn’t look good, I bet it tastes awful”. The grouch had never tried green eggs and ham and already made up his mind based on sight that he didn’t like them.

With our economy the way it is eggs have tripled in price. In 1961 a dozen eggs were $.39. The average cost of a dozen eggs is currently $4.95. Costco is selling 24 brown eggs for $8.49.  While shopping Pastor and First Lady Rice noticed there were many consumers paying a higher price for the white eggs instead of purchasing the lower priced brown eggs.

People assume there is something wrong with the brown eggs, without even trying them, because of their color. The truth about brown eggs is they are only brown on the outside.

The inside of the egg is the same as the white eggs and all the others. The nutrients in the egg are determined by the diet of the chicken (what it eats) and not the color of the shell!. The color of the shell is based on the chick that laid it.  Rhode Island Reds, Australorps, Brahmas, Golden Comets are a few of the type of chickens that lay brown eggs.

The Lesson:

Do not pre-judge how something or someone is going to be before getting to know them on the inside. Individual appearances can change. Beauty fades, fortunes can be lost, health challenges can change people drastically. Learn to love people for who they are and not what color they are.

In John Chapter 4 the woman at the well told Jesus, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman, how can you ask me for a drink”? Jews had no dealings with Samaritans because they worshipped foreign Gods. Jesus was more concerned about the soul of the woman at the well rather than her culture.

Matthew 7:12, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. Treat people the way you would like to be treated.
